1
LA Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens:
EN And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
^1
2
EN Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre: Thus says the Lord God: Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said: I am God, and I sit in the chair of God in the heart of the sea: whereas you are a man, and not God: and have set your heart as if it were the heart of God.
^2
3
EN Behold you are wiser than Daniel: no secret is hid from you.
^3
4
LA in sapientia et prudentia tua fecisti tibi fortitudinem, et acquisisti aurum et argentum in thesauris tuis:
EN In your wisdom and your understanding you have made yourself strong: and have gotten gold and silver into your treasures.
^4
5
LA in multitudine sapientiæ tuæ, et in negotiatione tua multiplicasti tibi fortitudinem, et elevatum est cor tuum in robore tuo:
EN By the greatness of your wisdom, and by your traffic you have increased your strength: and your heart is lifted up with your strength.
^5
6
LA propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Eo quod elevatum est cor tuum quasi cor dei,
EN Therefore, thus says the Lord God: Because your heart is lifted up as the heart of God:
^6
7
LA idcirco ecce ego adducam super te alienos, robustissimos gentium: et nudabunt gladios suos super pulchritudinem sapientiæ tuæ, et polluent decorem tuum.
EN Therefore behold, I will bring upon you strangers: the strongest of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and they shall defile your beauty.
^7
8
LA Interficient, et detrahent te: et morieris in interitu occisorum in corde maris.
EN They shall kill you, and bring you down: and you shall die the death of them that are slain in the heart of the sea.
^8
9
EN Will you yet say before them that slay you: I am God; whereas you are a man, and not God, in the hand of them that slay you?
^9
10
LA Morte incircumcisorum morieris in manu alienorum, quia ego locutus sum, ait Dominus Deus.
EN You shall die the death of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers: for I have spoken it, says the Lord God.
^10
[!note]- Thou art wiser than Daniel…
Viz., in thy own conceit. The wisdom of Daniel was so much celebrated in his days, that it became a proverb amongst the Chaldeans, when any one would express an extraordinary wisdom, to say he was as wise as Daniel. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
11
LA Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: Fili hominis, leva planctum super regem Tyri,
EN And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyre:
^11
12
EN And say to him: Thus says the Lord God: You were the seal of resemblance, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
^12
[!note]- You were the seal of resemblance…
The king of Tyre, by his dignity and his natural perfections, bore in himself a certain resemblance to God, by reason of which he might be called the seal of resemblance, etc. But what is here said to him is commonly understood of Lucifer, the king over all the children of pride. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
13
LA In deliciis paradisi Dei fuisti: omnis lapis pretiosus operimentum tuum, sardius, topazius, et jaspis, chrysolithus, et onyx, et beryllus, sapphirus, et carbunculus, et smaragdus: aurum, opus decoris tui: et foramina tua, in die qua conditus es, præparata sunt.
EN You were in the pleasures of the paradise of God: every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, the topaz, and the jasper, the chrysolite, and the onyx, and the beryl, the sapphire, and the carbuncle, and the emerald: gold the work of your beauty: and your pipes were prepared in the day that you were created.
^13
14
LA Tu cherub extentus, et protegens, et posui te in monte sancto Dei: in medio lapidum ignitorum ambulasti,
EN You a cherub stretched out, and protecting, and I set you in the holy mountain of God, you have walked in the midst of the stones of fire.
^14
[!note]- The stones of fire…
That is, bright and precious stones which sparkle like fire. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
15
LA perfectus in viis tuis a die conditionis tuæ, donec inventa est iniquitas in te.
EN You were perfect in your ways from the day of your creation, until iniquity was found in you.
^15
16
EN By the multitude of your merchandise, your inner parts were filled with iniquity, and you have sinned: and I cast you out from the mountain of God, and destroyed you, O covering cherub, out of the midst of the stones of fire.
^16
17
LA Et elevatum est cor tuum in decore tuo; perdidisti sapientiam tuam in decore tuo: in terram projeci te; ante faciem regum dedi te ut cernerent te.
EN And your heart was lifted up with your beauty: you have lost your wisdom in your beauty, I have cast you to the ground: I have set you before the face of kings, that they might behold you.
^17
18
LA In multitudine iniquitatum tuarum, et iniquitate negotiationis tuæ, polluisti sanctificationem tuam: producam ergo ignem de medio tui, qui comedat te, et dabo te in cinerem super terram, in conspectu omnium videntium te.
EN You have defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, and by the iniquity of your traffic: therefore I will bring forth a fire from the midst of you, to devour you, and I will make you as ashes upon the earth in the sight of all that see you.
^18
19
LA Omnes qui viderint te in gentibus, obstupescent super te: nihili factus es, et non eris in perpetuum.
EN All that shall see you among the nations, shall be astonished at you: you are brought to nothing, and you shall never be any more.
^19
[!note]- A cherub stretched out…
That is, thy wings extended. This alludes to the figure of the cherubims in the sanctuary, which with stretched out wings covered the ark. – Ibid. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)

LA Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens:

EN Son of man, set your face against Sidon: and you shall prophesy of it,
^21
22
EN and shall say: Thus says the Lord God: Behold I come against you, Sidon, and I will be glorified in the midst of you: and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall execute judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.
^22
23
LA Et immittam ei pestilentiam, et sanguinem in plateis ejus: et corruent interfecti in medio ejus gladio per circuitum, et scient quia ego Dominus.
EN And I will send into her pestilence, and blood in her streets: and they shall fall being slain by the sword on all sides in the midst thereof: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
^23
24
EN And the house of Israel shall have no more a stumbling block of bitterness, nor a thorn causing pain on every side round about them, of them that are against them: and they shall know that I am the Lord God.
^24
25
LA Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Quando congregavero domum Israël de populis in quibus dispersi sunt, sanctificabor in eis coram gentibus: et habitabunt in terra sua, quam dedi servo meo Jacob:
EN Thus says the Lord God: When I shall have gathered together the house of Israel out of the people among whom they are scattered: I will be sanctified in them before the Gentiles: and they shall dwell in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.
^25
26
EN And they shall dwell therein secure, and they shall build houses, and shall plant vineyards, and shall dwell with confidence, when I shall have executed judgments upon all that are their enemies round about: and they shall know that I am the Lord their God.
